The game features five single-player game styles: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus, Battle, and Mission. The Grand Prix and also Vs modes require the participant choose a motor course from one of 50 cc, 100 cc, and 150 cc. The courses serve as problem levels–the higher the motor course, the quicker each of karts go. Moreover, a Mirror mode may be unlocked, where karts utilize 150 cc motors and monitors are reversed (like signs and lettering within the first orientation).
In Grand Prix mode, the player claims against seven computer-controlled racers at a collection of courses that are predetermined. Unlike previous Mario Kart games, that featured four cups, Mario Kart DS features eight cups: Mushroom, Flower, Star, Special, Shell, Banana, Leaf and Lightning, together with the latter 4 cups comprising entirely of tracks derived from previous entries in the Mario Kart series. Each cup includes four tracks, for a total of 32. When a cup has been completed, a rating will be awarded dependent on the times and places, ranging from E into A, then to 1, two or three stars. Like in Double Dash, players receive points for each finishing position.
In Time Trial mode, the participant must finish a class as rapidly as you can by utilizing 1, two or three mushrooms (depending on which kart is used). The fastest time is then saved as a ghost, a duplicate of the participant’s performance, which the player can race later.
In V.S. mode, the player races on a course of the choosing either against computer-controlled competitions or in local multiplayer. The style can be played either individually or in groups, which separates racers to a blue team and a red staff; in multiplayer, players can control which team they’re placed on. Moreover, the number of races played and scoring system can also be altered.
Battle mode includes two game modes, including Balloon Battle and Shine Runners, both which also enable the player to perform either individually or in teams.
In Balloon Battle, the player has to pop the balloons of those players by assaulting them, or they could steal balloons by fostering into other karts. Each participant begins the battle with 1 balloon. These can be re-inflated up to 4 times. In multiplayer, even if a human player loses all his/her balloons, he’s from the game and becomes a ghost. As a ghost, a player can only place product boxes. If the battle is played single player, then the match ends and the results are declared when all the human player’s ring are popped.
